Aerials Attend BC Provincial Championships
April 23, 2006

Seven competitive athletes attended the BC Provincials held in Surrey, this spring. The youngest of the group was Aliya Sepkowski, 10 years old, who proudly competed and stuck a back handspring on the balance beam. In a group of 48 athletes, she had a high score of 8.634 on floor exercise, placing her in 23rd spot. Teammate, Kendra Vizzutti performed a very clean floor routine which placed her in 6th with a score of 8.967 in the same grouping. She took a fall on the beam but completed all her routines.

In the Level 2 Novice group, the team of Julie McKenzie, Kierra Jones, and Carly Glover had strong showings. Julie stole the meet with a gold medal on beam and a flawless routine. She placed 6th all around out of 41 athletes with consistent routines on all events. Kierra Jones surprised her coach with a complex two salto tumbling line that clenched 6th place on floor! She competed a strong beam routine that gave her 11th place and an all around placing of 9th. Carly Glover was steady on all events and performed changes to a new bar routine. She placed 18th in the field of 41.

Kayla Raimondo was alone in the Level 2 Open category and swung her way to a 2nd place silver medal on bars! She had a disappointing floor performance but brought her all around placing up to 17th out of 29 with a strong beam routine.

Wrapping up the championship meet was Courtney Craigen, a Level 3 Open competitor. Courtney placed 9th on vault and floor; 8th on beam; and 16th all around in a category of 24 athletes. Despite a solid warm up on bars, Courtney had a major fall which dropped her down on the all around.

Congratulations to all athletes for their performances and their dedication to their training. You have made your coaches and your families very proud!!
